Week 1: Introduction to SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In a simple term, it means how to use search engine to help you make more money from the Internet.

How can you make more money from the Internet? As you know, people mostly use the Internet to find information, and when someone is trying to find information, they use Search Engine.

The key to a successful Internet Marketing strategy is to funnel the right flow of traffic to your website, i.e. traffic from interested consumers, preferably traffic with low competition, and traffic which has good commercial values.

What are the benefits of SEO ?

  • SEO brings in more targeted traffic as opposed to any traffic. It wouldn’t do any good if you are trying to sell air conditioning to people looking for gardening equipments. You probably won’t sell. Search Engines can filter and funnel targeted traffic to your website in a way other advertising tools cannot do.
  • SEO helps customers find you so you can focus manpower on providing good products and service to them. Instead of making cold calls to people who have no interests. Now interested prospects can call you when they have an interest or are more ready to buy
  • Work for you 24/7 without human intervention. Even when you are asleep, other people who are still up and searching the internet can find you.
  • SEO has upfront costs but the result lasts, it is a long term investment and not temporary unlike some other forms of advertising

What exactly is SEO?

SEO is nothing more than a set of tips and tricks to make your website compliant with search engine policy of how it views a ‘good and credible’ website.

Search Engines seek to provide good experience to consumers by providing what best matches their search intent. If search engines can do this job well, people keep using them to search. Therefore, Search Engines need to weed out sites which are not providing good information, or information that are not providing good value, or information that are not matching search intent at all.

So SEO improves your website so that it provides good information to users, this information has to match what they are looking for, and it needs to be information of good value.

Week 2: Indexing and Ranking

Last week, we learn that Search Engines like websites that provide good information for particular search keywords, because it makes consumers happy to find answers to what they are looking for. But there are so many websites that provide similar information, how do search engines find them?

Indexing

In general, Search Engines are aware of a new website when it is published on the WWW (world wide web). WWW is like a gigantic library from which users are constantly looking for information. When a user is searching for a key search term, search engine does not start scanning one website at a time. However, it looks at the indices it previously scanned to find websites which match the search term specified by the user.

How are these indices formed?

The indices are formed when your website is ‘crawled’ by search engine ‘spider’ (search engine algorithm). When a search engine crawls your site, it gathers important keywords it thinks your site is about and put them into indices that it can later use to find your website.

Week 3: How Search Engines find and rank websites

Last week we talk about how a Search Engine knows about the content of your website, and how it index your site, so the information can be referred to at a later time when someone is looking for those terms.

Suppose you are searching for the term “Dentist in Raleigh”. Search Engine finds many websites which match this keyword because obviously there are many dentists in Raleigh. So how does a search engine ranks the results in order of first to last (this is what SEO is all about, after all)

Website ranking on a page or SERP – Search Engine Result Page, is very much like how human rank other businesses. In this example, we are looking for a dentist, but most people don’t want just any dentist, they want a dentist who is knowledgeable, experienced, and has good reputation (as voted by other people). Search Engines try to mimic human experience when ranking the search results.

First, Search Engine looks at the content on the website, are there a lot of information to indicate that this dentist is knowledgeable? How long has he been in business? Is he an expert in this field? Does his website mention a lot of things about his expertise? In a nutshell this is referred to as On-Page Optimization

Second, Search Engine look to see how many people refer to this dentist when someone asks for one. Imagine if you just relocate to another part of the country. You don’t know who’s who so you ask your neighbors or people in the area if they know a good dentist. You are likely to pick the one which most people recommend. It is good if there are many people talking about this dentist, but it helps even more if the dental association, University dental school, better business bureau, or any authoritative organizations give good rating about this dentist. This second part is called off-page optimization (or link building)

Week 4: Elements of On-Page SEO

In a nutshell, On-Page SEO is the process to increase the “relevance” of your website to the search terms that you are trying to target or rank for.

When it comes to On-Page SEO, it is good to point out early on that there is a part of the website that are seen by human readers, and there is another part that is viewable only by Search Engine Crawler (or Spider).

The first part of On-Page SEO is the Title Meta Tag. Title Meta Tag is the tag which only the spider can see, but not the users, Search Engine Spider uses title tag as a summary of what the content of that particular webpage is about, so it helps to put the keywords you are trying to rank in the title tag. But make sure that your page also has that content also, otherwise, it will be dishonest to search engine.

Search Engine also uses title tag when it displays your website as a result of organic search. Try searching for something like “dentist in Raleigh” and see the very top line (largest fonts) right above the URL, that is the content of your title tag.

Second, There are other Meta tags i.e. Description Meta Tag and Keywords Meta Tag. Keyword Meta tag is no longer used by Google but some other search engines are still using them. Description Meta tag is a longer description of what your webpage is all about. (not the whole site). When writing description meta tag, imagine yourself if you are on an elevator and you have only 30 secs to introduce yourself to a stranger and tell them what your business is all about. It is like an ‘elevator pitch’ for each of your webpage.

Last, but not least, the content of your page is one of the most important SEO factor. The content of your webpage is both seen by human and spider, so it should provide the information that the user is searching. Suppose you put effort into ranking for the term “Italian restaurants in Raleigh”, but when the user finds you, your webpage is showing a bunch of Chinese restaurants in Raleigh, the users would be disappointed, wouldn’t they?

In addition to the content which has to match the search terms, the navigation is also important. Suppose you are trying to sell health food online, but the link to the sales page is broken (404 page not found) so users do not know how to purchase, it would be frustrating not to say that you’d lose the sales.

Search Engine factors in all these On-Page factor and gives you an SEO score. Basically, it is a way to indicate how well your webpage is in providing search experience to your users.

Week 5: Off-Page SEO

When SEO first started about a decade ago, On-Page SEO is good enough for you to rank high on any keywords, but later on, when there are more and more websites, search engines need more factors to distinguish the importance of one website from the other, and that is Off-Page SEO.

Off-Page SEO refers to any resources outside of your own website that refer to your website. This can be web directories, or any articles, blog posts, blog comments, any incoming links that point to your website from another.

Off-Page SEO is sometimes called “Link Building”, “Backlink Building”, “Inbound Links”. If On-Page SEO indicates the “relevance” of your website to a search term, then Off-Page SEO is the factor to indicate the “importance” of your website relative to others found by the same search term.

There are many ways to build incoming links to your website, which will boost the search engine ranking of your website. The general guideline is to get both quantity and quality links to your website. By quality, I mean links that pass the ‘editorial judgement’ of the other website editor. What does this actually mean?

Suppose I want to promote a restaurant business, so I list my restaurant in the yellow pages. That is helpful so that people can see it and hopefully come to my restaurant. What do you think if my customers put good reviews on Yelp about my restaurants? I bet you can guess that people would be more influenced to come to my restaurant because of the Yelp reviews than the Yellow pages. Why? Because it passes the judgement of customers..

Let’s take it one step further, what if well-known food experts like Chef Gordon Ramsey or Rachel Ray come to eat at my restaurants and like it so much that they talk about my restaurant on their regular TV show without me paying them? I bet there would be a long line of customers waiting to come in to my restaurant, wouldn’t it.

Likewise, the incoming links to your website will help boost the ranking when they are quantity and quality links. Links are viewed as valuable when they pass the editorial judgement of the other websites and even more so, when the other website is a credible, authoritative websites.

Week 6: Mistakes to avoid in SEO

Search Engine Optimization is very powerful when applied correctly. The following are some mistakes to avoid

1) Not doing keyword research. As we learned from our lesson few weeks back, traffic is only helpful when it is targeted and funneled correctly for your website. This is by far the most common mistake in doing SEO. One could spend a lot of money to get some keywords ranking high, but they may not be the right traffic for your business

2) Not diversified in inbound linking strategies – Customers behavior vary when it comes to the use of the Internet. When doing SEO, do not ignore directory listings, Social Medias, or display network ads, Niche networks etc. Consider a well-rounded approach to getting website visibility as opposed to relying on one method alone.

3) Using Black Hat Strategies. Black-hat strategies refer to any techniques that will provide different information to search engine crawler than from the real users. Several years ago, when Search Engine algorithms were more primitive, it looks for more concrete factors on your website to decide on ranking factors, therefore some clever webmasters were looking to ways to trick search engine spider. I will post more about what are some techniques to avoid. Any websites that were found using this strategy will be penalized by search engine by lowering the ranking or getting de-indexed.

4) Not following up on your traffic – When you start getting your ranking high, you will get more traffic, but not all of them are the ones which are ready for conversion. Be prepared to provide complete information on your website, as well as prepare to handle customers of all levels of interests. So that you will make the best use of your dollar you spend on Search Engine Marketing.

Understanding SEO

If you have a website or you are in the business of making websites for others, you will have to get a full background on search engine optimization or SEO. This is an internet marketing tool that makes optimized websites land in the top result pages of search engines. It is beneficial to be within the first three result pages of Google or Yahoo because searchers usually browse through the first three pages only. Rarely do they go to the other pages as this will be tiring for them. If you follow the right way to use SEO, your website will be seen by many people. If yours is a business website, you will definitely get more customers.

SEO employs the usage of keywords which are the words or phrases that online searchers use when they make an inquiry. The keywords should be used throughout your website so search engine will recognize the key theme of your website. It is however necessary to use the right keywords that best describe the product or service you are selling. In addition, your articles should be grammatically correct and comprehensible. Websites which have many grammatical flaws are not well-liked by users, therefore search engines penalizes these types of websites and regard them as low ranking when it compares many website with the same subject. In addition, use the keywords naturally and do not force them in your website.

SEO strategy suggests having a captivating title in your website or your articles with the main keyword in the title. The keywords should be in the beginning of the title. Make the title of your content sounds as natural as possible. You can also use secondary keywords too in the title if you want and as long as it will make sense.

SEO requires that in the body of your document, you should also include sub-headings to make your write-up organized. The sub-headings of course must have the primary keyword there. In your website, your home page or main page should have your primary keyword. It must be seen 2%-5% in the page. If your page or article has 500 words, 5% of that is 25 so you need to use the keyword 25 times. Do not go beyond 5% however as Google and other search engines regard these websites as spam since the keywords are excessively used for the purpose of SEO and not have the best user experience in mind.

SEO is now used globally by online businesses and companies to advocate or promote a product, service or piece of information. If you want to generate huge sales and profits in your online business, use SEO for you to achieve your goal.

If you need to use images, add ALT tags to them so that those who cannot see images properly can read what they are. The text of the ALT tags must also have the primary keyword in them.

SEO involves the use of primary and secondary keywords so that they would be indexed by search engines. Use keywords that you think searchers will use when they make an online inquiry in search engines. You can also use online tools provided by search engines such as Google and Yahoo and other websites that provide commonly-used keywords about a specific topic. The longer a visitor stays on your page, it means he is getting the information he wants. Search engines actually record the time when a user stays on a website he found through them.

In your website, make sure to add more informative pages that are meaningful aside from your Home Page. For each page, have a title that will serve as a guide to visitors. These titles should be relevant and they must contain the keyword too. Search engines know everything happening in your website therefore they will know if your pages are frequented by users. Make sure the title for each page is relevant to the content it contains.

Always have high-quality content such as articles in your website as this is an effective SEO tool. These articles should have your keywords in them at not more than 5% throughout the article. When you have plenty of quality data, more readers will go to your website. When search engines notice that you are often read and visited by people due to your quality content, they will place you in their top result pages. Use around 500 to 700 words in each article and organize them properly by using sub-heading and bullet points. You should also provide text links at the bottom of each article so that readers will be encouraged to visit the next few pages of your website.

Businesses have now used SEO techniques to achieve maximum sales and profits globally. Even if your business is small, once you employ SEO effectively, you too will be able to compete with these big businesses in getting customers.

The Importance of Keyword Research in Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Keyword research is the foundation of every search engine optimization campaign. It is the very beginning of SEO. You are not doing SEO right if you are not participating in social media sites, you need to have a list of your most important and relevant keywords. For you to be able to achieve this objective, you must learn how to conduct keyword research. As you should probably know by now, competition for keywords online is very tough. It’s not uncommon to see millions of websites targeting the same keyword or phrase. This is how competitive it is out there. So if you are not doing keyword research but your competitors are, then they will beat your business to the punch. They will take their positions at the top ten results while you languish on page ten or page 50.

Conducting keyword research is not that hard. It can be frustrating in the beginning but you will easily get used to it in time. There are numerous keyword research tools available in the market. Some are free and some ask for a charge. If you are running a traditional website or blog, the free tools will be more than enough to provide you with your research needs. Well, you can avail of the paid tools as long as you have the budget for it but if you are cash-strapped, stick to the free tools like the Google Keyword Tool. In cases where you don’t have the time to do the research yourself, you can always find someone to do it for you. What matters the most is that you get the keywords most relevant to the nature of your website.

Keyword research is something you should never take for granted. It lays the foundation on how people will be able to find you online. If you are using the right keywords, this would mean more traffic and more customers for your business courtesy of the search engines.

The majority of the time the posts will not pay you much, but you’ll be able to link back to your site and therefore gain some much needed exposure to a new group of readers that you might not normally reach. If you’re looking to figure out how or what to write on
another person’s site, consider the following tips and make sure you don’t just do it once, do it often.

while, you’ll be able to contact them in order to ask for a spot to write a post for them. Make sure that you’re within your niche, and you don’t travel too far away. For instance, if you’re • Target Search – You first need to start reading other people’s blogs and look at their overall readership. Start your quest by commenting on their posts, and being friendly. After a writing about kung fu movies, don’t write a post on a site dedicated to food. Stick to your niche, even if it’s under a similar banner. Looking back at the aforementioned niche, consider an option other types of “movies” and not just the genre. Look to make lateral movements in terms of topic, rather than jumping to all new irrelevant content.

  • Pre-Write – Think about the niche you’re looking to write in. Consider writing a set of articles specifically for the purpose of posting them on someoneelses website. This might be hard at first, but if you manage to write a few extra articles a day, you’ll have a stockpile of different things that you can submit to a blogger and have them review. If they enjoy it, they’ll post it and you get the back link.
  • Best Foot Forward – The second part of the aforementioned tip is to write your best. Put yourself at your best in the writing, and choose each word and any synonyms carefully. Because you have the opportunity to pre-write, you have the option to edit and re-edit, until it’s perfect. Once it’s perfect, you’ll come across as a professional, and generate attention, which is the goal here.

If you manage to utilize the above tips, and sprinkle in your own influence and style, you’ll generate many quality back links well worth the trouble. Whether you’re looking at increasing your reach through SEO or just looking for a new audience, you’ll find it by simply writing guest posts.

How to Achieve Success in Mobile Device and Search Marketing

Mobile device and search marketing is the process of marketing to people who use mobile devices. It is being touted as the seventh mass media channel after TV, radio, recordings, print, cinema and the internet. Mobile devices have been in existence for a long time so it’s a little bit surprising to see how mobile device and search marketing seems to be taking off only now. You can’t help but ask, what took us so long to realize the potential of the mobile community as a marketing platform? The United States alone has over 250 million mobile phone users and estimates show that about 50% of these are using their phones to search online. This speaks a ton about the power and potential of mobile device and search marketing.

Above anything else, mobile marketing is an opportunity for you to expand the reach of your marketing efforts. It does not matter what form of business you are into, mobile marketing will still make for an effective addition to your marketing toolkit. Don’t make the assumption that just because you are into this or that kind of business, you can’t do mobile device and search marketing. As we said, mobile marketing can be used by any type of business, whether it’s selling products or offering services. Just like other online marketing strategies, mobile marketing can be automated and will require only a minimal investment from you. That said, there is no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of the platform.

Here are a few quick tips on how to find success in mobile device and search marketing:

1. Consider your mobile website’s URL structure. You need to optimize your site’s mobile presence. You can make use of a mobile URL aside from your traditional URL. To ensure that mobile users will be viewing your mobile URL, make use of a 301 redirect.
2. Make use of shorter keywords for your mobile content. Entrepreneurs often neglect this when conducting mobile device and search marketing. You are likely a mobile user so you know how people use shortcuts and a lot of abbreviations when searching through their mobile phones. You need to adapt your mobile content to cater to these kinds of searches.
3. When writing ad copies, make them short and direct to the point. Mobile phone users have even lower attention spans than desktop users.
4. In your content, include phone numbers that can be easily clicked and called by a mobile phone user.

Following these simple tips can significantly help you find success in mobile device and search marketing.

Online Advertising

Online advertising means advertising through the Internet. Many terms have been associated with online advertising. These include Pay-per-Click (PPC), Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Paid Search Marketing and Internet Marketing. Online advertising really relates to being able to get one’s website to be seen by those who have the interest in your offerings. Thus, what is important is to know and use the keywords that are frequently used by those interested in your line of product or service. If you do not put initial work on keyword research, your efforts to advertise online would be unsuccessful.

For people who are not sure about how online ads work, they can try immersing themselves into online advertising by opening a PPC account for instance with a major search engine. Observe then for a few months, its impact on your revenues. It is really simple to set-up. Through this, one can observe the value of keywords in driving traffic and consequently sales for one’s goods sold over the internet. However, aside from relying on keywords to advertise the product, the website itself has to be good enough or great enough to entice potential buyers to get to know your product or service more. Be objective when assessing your site. If you were the buyer, would you be interested in buying your goods or services after taking a look at your website?

Internet advertising is really a growing industry so that those still not on the boat should already join the bandwagon for them to partake in the billions of dollars that this industry rakes in. Currently online advertising represents 20% of total advertising spending but it is expected to grow by leaps and bounds for the coming years. This is not surprising as more people opt to get information and entertainment through online means. From 20% this year, online advertising’s share of the pie could reach up to 42% by 2014. This is good news for the major search engines but not so much for other traditional forms of media like television, newspaper, magazines and radio.

One of the reasons for the growth of online advertising is its flexibility. Even small and medium enterprises can avail of it because of its flexible pricing and business model per se. It is only through online advertising that one can track leads for every ad keyword. It is only through online advertising that one has a basis of the cost for each lead as well as the dollar cost for every sale. This is how flexible and user-friendly online advertising has become. This type of business model will surely be a force to reckon with for the years to come.

PPC Advertisement: An Overview

Pay-per-click (PPC) is a type of internet advertising used to direct traffic to websites through pay hosting services from advertisers. PPC with search engines are usually bid on keywords or phrases for targeting the market.

The development of the PPC started in 1998, when Jeffrey Brewer of Goto Setup Co. presented the use of search engines for advertising at the Annual TED Conference in California. Brewer’s presentations were soon followed by the conceptualization of the “Pay-per-click Advertising System”. In December 1999, Google launched its first search engine advertisement. A year later, the “AdWords System” was introduced, following the success of Google’s search engine services, which allowed many advertisers to create their own “Text Ads”. In 2002 however, internet advertisers filed charges against Google for copyright infringement. In July 2003, Yahoo! voluntarily acquired the “overture charges” filed by web advertisers vs. Google. The overture was worth $1.63 Billion.

Websites utilizing PPC ads practically displays a separate advertisement wherein the keyword query matches with the “keyword list” provided by the advertiser. The keyword queries are commonly found on the website’s “Sponsored Ads” or “Sponsored Links”. Some of the largest PPC networks most preferred by advertisers include Microsoft AdCenter, Yahoo! Search Marketing and Google AdWords. These three networks are operated under one bid-based advertising model.

Here are two basic models to determine the cost of a PPC advertisement:

• “Flat-rate” – in this model, both the advertiser and publisher will agree on the amount that will be paid for every click. In some cases however, the publisher provides a “Rate Card” which can track the list of various areas from their network. The flat-rate model practically allows advertisers to negotiate rates, either by “high-value contract” or “long term deal”.
• “Bid-based” – this PPC model allows advertisers to sign a contract that will guarantee them the competition they want. The contract permits them to compete with other advertisers under privatized auction deals. Bid-based model also allows advertisers to pay for every click they receive, along with the exact amount based from initial bid.

Majority of Pay-per-click advertisements today are utilizing the bid-based model in directing traffic to a single website. In addition, under the Bid-based model there are 3 ways of counting the costs

• CPC (Cost Per Click) CPC model is effective in counting the responses to the call-to-action in the ads displayed. Since users clicking on the ad is assumed to have an interest in purchasing product or service offered.

• CPM (Cost Per One Thousand of Impressions) This cost model is effective in counting the Brand Awareness. If ads are focused on increasing Brand-Awareness for users, CPM should be method used to count the costs of advertising.

• CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) This cost model is effective for counting business’ return on investment. Since not all the clicks convert to sales. Cost per acquisition lets business decide how much it’s willing to pay to acquire a customer through ads.
